Our mission at COP28
In 2023, the world endured its hottest summer on record, underscoring the urgent need to build resilience against the impacts of climate-driven extreme heat. While drastic reduction of greenhouse gas emissions is critical, the urgent need for adaptation—and the essential need for finance to mobilize it—is mounting every hour of every day.
At the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), the Climate Resilience Center accelerated collective action to deliver adaptation, finance, and policy solutions that protect people, livelihoods, and local economies from extreme heat at speed and scale, with a focus on:
- Elevating the critical need to address extreme heat’s impact on the health and well-being of vulnerable communities, promoting solutions that strengthen preparedness, awareness, and access to data.
- Mobilizing investments in climate adaptation by private actors including the banking, insurance, and asset management sectors.
- Showcasing innovative financial mechanisms for climate adaptation that protect the lives and livelihoods of women worldwide.

Looking back at COP27
Why focus on heat?
Today, heat kills more people globally than any other climate-driven disaster. Climate change is increasing the intensity, frequency, and duration of heat waves. And as temperatures rise, so does the inequality of extreme heat’s effects. Learn more about the economic, health, and developmental consequences of extreme heat.
