During this session the Mayors of Freetown, Sierra Leone, Monterrey, Mexico and the former Mayor of Quito, Ecuador will join our Chief Heat Officer from Athens, Greece to discuss best practices for addressing extreme heat related risks to protect urban population and the economy from the threat of this “silent killer.”
The Mayor of Monterrey will present the “Joint Declaration of Climate Emergency” for 20 Municipalities in Mexico, while the former Mayor of Quito will describe the Global Heat Advocacy Strategy that the City Champions for Heat Action Mayors are implementing to advance the urban extreme heat agenda with top world leaders and organizations.
The featured leaders will share programs and policies implemented at the local level to tackle extreme heat and its impacts, including:
- groundbreaking actions cities are implementing in different regions of the world to address heat-health related risks
- women’s leadership on heat related actions through the role of Chief Heat Officers in cities and the Global Chief Heat Officer at UN Habitat
- the Joint Climate Emergency Declaration for Mexican Cities, which Mayor Colosio will announce on behalf of 20 Mayors from his country
- good practices in heat adaptation exemplified by Mayor Aki-Sawyerr’s market shading initiative, Freetown the Treetown
