Join the Asian Development Bank and the Atlantic Council’s Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center (Arsht-Rock) on December 4, 2023, at 10:30 am GST in the Resilience Hub for a discussion focused on increasing women’s resilience to heat stress.
It is critical for policy and practice to understand how increasing temperatures are impacting women and to help establish priorities for climate change adaptation solutions. Studies show that labor losses have been underestimated, comparable to losses from COVID-19. Given that some of the sectors most affected are female-dominated, countries in the region need to develop responses that will support women to adapt and strengthen their resilience to heat stress.
At this event, ADB will launch a 3-year technical assistance project to work with developing member countries (DMCs) to identify and implement adaptation solutions to strengthen women’s resilience to heat stress. Climate change is increasing the intensity, frequency, and duration of heat waves in Asia and the Pacific. At 1.5C warming, 2.3 billion people could be vulnerable to heat waves, the majority in the Asia region (South Asia followed by South-East Asia) By 2100, under the current greenhouse gas emissions, 3 of 4 people in the world will be exposed to deadly heat conditions every year.
ADB will invest in building knowledge to increase understanding of the impacts of heat stress on economies, productivity, health, food security, health, and violence through a gender lens by partnering with organizations. ADB will support DMCs in gender-responsive heat action planning and identify solutions that governments can invest in and that respond to the needs of women and the poor, who have the least capacity to withstand the impacts of heat waves.
