OUR APPROACH
Using gaming and technology to build climate resilience
The Atlantic Council’s Climate Resilience Center uses gaming and new technologies to educate and equip players of all ages with the knowledge and actionable skills they need to protect themselves and their communities from the impacts of climate change. Our team meets people in the virtual spaces and worlds they are already exploring. Through video and board games, players experiment with and learn how to implement resilience solutions, bringing about real change that will save lives and livelihoods.
We connect our climate and gaming experts with developers, designers, and publishers to drive the changes needed to save ourselves and our planet through informative and inspiring gameplay.
In partnership with industry veterans and climate experts, the Climate Resilience Center collaborates with gaming companies, developers, and educators to reach 300 million players across the world by 2030.
HOW WE WORK
Collaborating to build climate resilience
Explore how we’re building climate resilience through our three-tiered strategy.
Every day, over three billion people play video games worldwide. That is over one-third of the world’s population, spanning every continent, age, gender, ethnicity, education level, and social class. The Climate Resilience Center collaborates with industry veterans and social impact experts to advance climate resilience games around the world.
We partner with AAA companies.
The Climate Resilience Center partners with large game publishing or AAA gaming companies to deliver actionable, life-saving interventions to players across the globe. We collaborate with developers to host games on platforms like Minecraft Education and offer workshops for studios and their teams.
We support indie game developers.
The Climate Resilience Center provides funding and content support to top-tier indie developers. Developers learn from our team to better embed climate resilience solutions into gameplay. We have partnered with twelve indie teams, including six game teams through our inaugural Climate Games Launchpad Accelerator program.
We advance industry knowledge.
With experts in game development, climate policy, and behavior change, the Gaming Center of Excellence has established itself within the games industry as the go-to resource for evidence-based interventions on climate resilience action and adaptation. Our team equips game development professionals with the resources they need to build community resilience through their own games, and to inform and activate players through transformational game design.
