SEVILLE—JULY 9, 2023 — Seville’s heat wave naming and categorization system has identified Heat Wave Xenia Sevilla – the second heat event to officially be named in advance of a dangerous heat episode this summer. The heat wave was identified and named through Arsht-Rock’s proMETEO initiative, a heat wave categorization and naming system in Seville, Spain.
Heat Wave Xenia is the third heat episode to be named since the system launched last year, following Heat Wave Zoe Sevilla in July 2022 and Heat Wave Yago Sevilla in June 2023. Under the proMETEO pilot system, heat waves are named when they pose a severe and intense danger to the public.
Heat Wave Xenia Sevilla will begin on Monday, July 10 and end on Thursday, July 13, bringing with it high daytime and nighttime temperatures. Heat Wave Xenia Sevilla is expected to reach Category 2, which means that the general population will be more vulnerable to the dangerous impacts of extreme heat.
The proMETEO Sevilla initiative was developed by the Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center in collaboration with the University of Seville and the City of Seville. The system assesses the possible health impacts of an upcoming heat event by examining the daytime maximum temperatures, humidity, nighttime temperatures, and the conditions of the previous 30 days. It also informs Seville’s residents about the dangerous health impacts of heat and gives them the knowledge and solutions they need to protect themselves from climate-driven extreme heat.
